SpaceX Soars With Yahsat Satellite Launches

In a major deal for both companies, Emirati satellite operator Yahsat has selected SpaceX to launch its next generation of communication satellites, Al Yah 4 (AY4) and Al Yah 5 (AY5). The powerful Falcon 9 rocket will carry the satellites into orbit in 2027 and 2028, respectively.

This agreement marks a significant step for Yahsat's $1.1 billion program to upgrade its satellite network. Airbus Defence and Space was previously chosen to design and build the advanced geostationary satellites, which will provide secure government communications across a vast region spanning the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and Asia.

"We are proud to collaborate with SpaceX on the upcoming Falcon 9 launches of our Al Yah 4 and Al Yah 5 satellites," said Ali Al Hashemi, Group Chief Executive Officer of Yahsat. "This partnership positions Yahsat to deliver on its largest ever government contract, providing critical communication services for the UAE for the next two decades."

The UAE government awarded Yahsat a $5.1 billion deal in September 2023 to ensure reliable broadband services until at least 2043. This agreement included a significant $1 billion advance payment to fund satellite development, launches, ground infrastructure, and insurance. Specific details regarding the launch contract value with SpaceX were not disclosed.

This mission adds to SpaceX's impressive portfolio of successful launches for international clients. The company's reliable and cost-effective Falcon 9 rocket continues to be a leader in the commercial launch market.
