US Rockets Set For Takeoff From Omani Spaceport

The Gulf region is poised to enter the space race, with a US firm planning to launch rockets from Oman's upcoming Etlaq Spaceport. This collaboration between ABL Space Systems and Oman could mark the first orbital satellite launches from the region.

An agreement signed last week signifies the potential for ABL's RS1 rocket to take flight from the spaceport located in Duqm. While no confirmed launch date was announced, the inaugural launch could occur later this decade, depending on the progress of both the rocket and the spaceport itself.

ABL's RS1 is a newcomer to the launch scene. The company's first attempt to reach orbit in January 2023 from Alaska unfortunately ended in failure. However, they are planning a second launch attempt from Alaska later this month. The RS1 is a two-stage expendable launch vehicle designed to deliver payloads of up to 1,350 kilograms into low-Earth orbit.

Etlaq Spaceport is still under development, with an expected operational date of 2027. The spaceport boasts a strategic location near a commercial airport and deepwater port, offering logistical advantages for future satellite missions. Omani officials believe this project will not only strengthen their domestic space sector but also establish the country as a leader in the global space industry.

"The Gulf region space eco-system is growing immensely, with new investment and large ambition in exploration, science missions and constellation deployment," said Harry O'Hanley, CEO of ABL. This partnership between ABL and Oman could be a significant step towards fulfilling those ambitions.
