Iridium Secures $94 Million Space Force Contract To Bolster U.S. Military Communications

Iridium Communications, a leading provider of global mobile satellite communications, has secured a new five-year contract valued at $94 million (with a potential total value of $103 million) from the U.S. Space Force. This critical agreement signifies the continued reliance of the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) on Iridium's reliable satellite network for secure military communications across the globe.

The contract, awarded by the Space Systems Command's Commercial Space Office (COMSO), is for Iridium's Enhanced Mobile Satellite Services (EMSS) capabilities and security sustainment services (ECS3). This program ensures the continued operation and seamless connectivity of the EMSS Service Center, a vital hub facilitating secure voice, broadcast, push-to-talk, and other critical communication services for the DoD via the Iridium network.

"This award strengthens our vital partnership with the U.S. Department of Defense," said Matt Desch, CEO of Iridium, in a press release. "Iridium's robust and secure communications infrastructure is essential for our nation's military, and we are honored to continue supporting their mission-critical operations worldwide."

The ECS3 contract replaces a previous 4.5-year agreement and extends Iridium's support for EMSS through at least 2029. This signifies the continued trust the DoD places in Iridium's technology and its ability to provide dependable communication solutions, even in remote or challenging environments.

Iridium's low-earth orbit (LEO) constellation boasts 66 operational satellites, offering comprehensive global coverage. This, coupled with Iridium's focus on security features, makes it a highly attractive option for government and military communication needs.

"Iridium's satellite network provides a unique capability for secure and reliable voice and data communication anywhere on Earth," said a spokesperson for the U.S. Space Force. "This contract ensures the continued availability of this essential service for our warfighters around the world."

The Iridium-Space Force partnership extends beyond the EMSS program. Iridium is also a participant in the DoD's Blackjack constellation initiative, a military-funded program aiming to develop a proliferated LEO communications network.

This latest contract award underscores the growing importance of commercial satellite communication providers in supporting national security efforts. As the reliance on secure and dependable global communication grows, Iridium's role in the U.S. military's communication infrastructure is likely to remain prominent.
