"Astronauts will explore and conduct experiments where humans have never been: The lunar south pole," NASA officials wrote in the announcement. "With NASA's plans for the future of exploration," the agency added, "new astronauts will fly farther into space than ever before on lunar missions and may be the first humans to fly on to Mars."

To qualify for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, applicants must be U.S. citizens and possess a master's degree in a STEM field (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics) or a medical doctorate. Additionally, they'll need at least two years of relevant professional experience or 1,000 hours of pilot-in-command time on jet aircraft. Most importantly, they must pass a rigorous medical evaluation and demonstrate exceptional leadership, teamwork, and communication skills.
