India Announces First Astronaut Crew For Landmark Space Mission

India has made history by unveiling the four astronauts selected for the country's first-ever human spaceflight, the Gaganyaan mission. The announcement marks a significant leap for India's ambitious space program and places the nation amongst an elite group capable of sending humans into orbit.

The four astronauts, all distinguished Indian Air Force pilots, are:

  • Group Captain Prashanth Balakrishnan Nair
  • Group Captain Ajit Krishnan
  • Group Captain Angad Pratap
  • Wing Commander Shubhanshu Shukla

The crew was introduced during a ceremony at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in attendance.

The Gaganyaan mission is scheduled for launch sometime between 2024 and 2025. The astronauts are currently undergoing rigorous training in Russia to prepare for their journey. The mission will involve a crewed orbital spacecraft spending approximately a week in space before returning to Earth.
