Astranis Targets Starlink With Next-Gen Satellite Boasting 5x Capacity

Space internet provider Astranis has fired a shot across the bow of rival SpaceX's Starlink program, unveiling its next-generation Omega satellite. The new design boasts a significant leap in data transmission capability, offering a potential game-changer in the burgeoning satellite internet market.

Astranis claims the Omega satellite can deliver a whopping 50Gbps of internet bandwidth to Earth, a fivefold increase compared to their current offerings. This improvement comes courtesy of Astranis's in-house innovations, including a new software-defined radio and custom-designed semiconductors. While details on consumer speeds are yet to be revealed, the increased capacity suggests Astranis is targeting businesses, governments, and internet service providers (ISPs) seeking a powerful and potentially lower-cost alternative to Starlink.

While Starlink currently offers download speeds exceeding 200Mbps in some areas, congestion can be an issue. Astranis's focus on raw capacity could be particularly attractive to clients in remote or underserved regions where Starlink might struggle.

The news comes as competition in the low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite internet market heats up. Several companies are vying for a slice of the pie, offering internet access to areas poorly served by traditional terrestrial infrastructure.
